Stainless steel, a material highly favoured by architects, interior designers, and engineers, often remains shrouded in misconceptions despite its widespread specification. This session is designed to address this gap in understanding by covering a comprehensive array of topics, including:

  • Dispelling common myths surrounding stainless steel.
  • Tracing the historical development of stainless steel.
  • Providing a clear definition of stainless steel.
  • Delving into the chemistry behind stainless steel, focusing on key elemental compositions.
  • Exploring its mechanical properties, including ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS), and elongation.
  • Analyzing mill test reports (MTRs) for critical insights.
  • Categorizing stainless steel into its major groups, delineating their characteristics and applications.
  • Detailing various stainless steel grades and their respective attributes.
  • Examining the characteristics of austenitic stainless steel, particularly the 300 series.
  • Mapping out the "Family Tree" within the 300 series for clarity.
  • Discussing different finishes available for stainless steel.
  • Evaluating life cycle costs associated with stainless steel deployment.
  • Identifying key factors influencing the selection of stainless steel for diverse applications.

By systematically addressing these topics, participants will gain a nuanced understanding of stainless steel, empowering them to make informed decisions regarding its specification and utilization in their respective fields.

This session will be presented by Scott Haddy, BSc.
